Alister MacKenzie

Alister MacKenzie (1870–1934) was a British golf course architect born in Yorkshire. Originally a surgeon who served in the Boer War, he applied camouflage principles to course design. His breakthrough came in 1907 with Alwoodley Golf Club. MacKenzie designed over 50 courses on four continents; his masterpieces include Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne (West)—three of Golf Digest's Top 10 worldwide. He favoured strategic options, intricate bunkering, natural contours, and ground play. Active from the 1900s to the 1930s, he co-designed Augusta with Bobby Jones shortly before his death in California. A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
