Frederick William Hawtree
Frederick William Hawtree (1916–2000) was a British golf course architect, son of F.G. Hawtree who founded the family practice in 1912. Educated at Tonbridge and Oxford, he joined the firm after serving in WWII (including 1942–45 as a POW). Between 1945 and 1980 he designed about 80 new courses and remodelled 400 others across four continents. Notable work includes redesigns of Royal Birkdale and Hillside, plus new courses at King Norton, Foxhills, and Pals. He co-founded the British Association of Golf Course Architects (1971) and served as its President. The Hawtree practice is the longest continuous golf design firm on record, continued by his son Martin.
