Harry Vardon
Harry Vardon (1870–1937) was a six-time Open champion from Jersey, known as "the Stylist" and a member of the Great Triumvirate. His architectural output was limited but distinctive: his designs were said to ask "many questions of the golfer off the tee and into the greens," with characteristically bold bunkering. Notable courses include Royal County Down, Woodhall Spa, Little Aston, Ganton, and South Hertfordshire—where he remained as professional for most of his career. He favoured strategic challenges that tested decision-making. Vardon also popularised the overlapping grip, overcame tuberculosis, and was golf's first international celebrity after his 1900 US tour. On the game itself, he said: "Relaxation, added to a few necessary fundamental principles, is the basis of this great game."
