Martin Hawtree
Martin Hawtree (b. 1947) is an English golf course architect and third-generation member of the Hawtree family firm, representing over 100 years of continuous design work. He took over the practice in 1984–85 and has designed or redesigned Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale, Turnberry, Portmarnock, Lahinch, Ballybunion, and Trump International Scotland. Hawtree has worked on six Open Championship venues and developed a particular passion for links golf. He served as Honorary Secretary (1985–95) and President (1996–97) of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects, and received EIGCA's Outstanding Contribution Award in 2024. He now lives in Germany and maintains semi-retired consulting across the UK, Ireland, and continental Europe.
