Sandy Herd

Sandy Herd (1868–1944) was a Scottish professional golfer and golf course architect from St Andrews. He won The Open in 1902 at Hoylake, becoming the first Open champion to use the Haskell rubber-cored ball. At 52 he was the oldest Open runner-up for 89 years. Herd designed or redesigned numerous courses, primarily in England, including Stockport, Pannal, Harrogate, Wakefield, Heysham, Wilmslow, Bramhall, and St Annes Old Links. His courses were laid out in an open style resembling inland links. He worked from the 1890s through the 1920s, with many layouts later altered by rebunkering and tree planting.
