Abbeydale Golf Club

The Abbeydale Golf Course was established by a group of local businessmen and professionals who met at the Devonshire Arms pub in Dore in July 1895, initially known as the Dore Golf Club. Its establishment was driven by the need for a more conveniently located golf venue as the sport gained popularity among the affluent, with many founding members previously playing at Lindrick which was harder to access from Sheffield.

The first version of the golf course was a nine-hole layout at Ryecroft Farm, with holes ranging from 158 to 365 yards, and the farm's dining room serving as the clubhouse. By 1897, however, the land was reverted to agricultural use by its new owners, prompting the search for a new site.

Alex 'Sandy' Herd, a Scottish golf professional and future Open Champion, advised on relocating to land on the Beauchief Estate, near the ruins of Beauchief Abbey. A lease was secured with the estate's owners, leading to the golf course's move and renaming to Abbeydale Golf Club, with an initial design by Herd of nine holes varying from 130 to 520 yards.

In 1906, a wooden clubhouse was erected, even as the affluent committee members continued to meet in more upscale city center hotels. Membership grew steadily, with a cap eventually placed at 160 men and 60 women by 1910 due to rising demand.
