Aberdovey Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North Wales. The club was first formed in 1892.
Aberdovey Golf Club in Aberdyfi, Wales, was designed by James Braid in 1892 with subsequent work by Herbert Fowler in 1893 and Harry Colt in 1910. The golf course stretches over a flat links area between the railroad tracks and the sea, with a routing that provides a mixture of terrain and challenges.
Golf at Aberdovey first began in 1886 when the Ruck family and their relatives created a makeshift course on Aberdyfi Common, using flowerpots as holes. Aberdovey Golf Club was officially founded in 1892, and in 1905, the club purchased the freehold of the common for £2,250, establishing a more permanent course amidst the natural landscape.
The course, known for its traditional links style, features in-and-out formations, large sand dunes, and a constant presence of wind, making it a challenging and scenic golfing experience. It has been a part of the Welsh Amateur Championship rota and has hosted many national events. The course and its surrounding dunes are also part of the Dyfi Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to unique wildlife like sand lizards and the lesser water plantain.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 12th holes are particularly notable. Features include the blind par-3 3rd hole and the risk-reward dynamics of the short par-4 2nd hole, as well as the 12th hole, which is characterized by its reliance on natural elements and landscape rather than sand hazards.
