About: Aboyne Golf Club

Aboyne Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North East Scotland. The club was first formed in 1883.

The golf course at Aboyne was established in 1874, with initial gameplay over nine holes on the village green. Notable figures including Sir Alexander Lyon and early club leaders like Mr WE Nicol of Ballogie, Dr Keith, and the Rev. Dr. Drummond were central to its early development and the founding of the Club in 1883.

In 1905, the course moved to its current location adjacent to a loch on land leased from the Aboyne Castle estate, initially featuring nine holes on what is now the inward half. By 1908, the course expanded to 18 holes with assistance from Archie Simpson of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, celebrated with a grand opening hosted by Lord Aberdeen.

Additional changes in 1913 lengthened the course to 5010 yards, and golf legends Harry Vardon and Ted Ray marked the occasion with an exhibition match. The land was bequeathed to the people of Aboyne by James Mearns in 1943, ensuring the club's future was secured for as long as the land remained a golf course.

Distracted by two world wars, the course saw varied use, including for agriculture, before being restored in 1946. The following years up to the 1970s saw modest improvements and an increase in popularity, leading to the expansion of facilities boosted by the area's economic growth due to the North Sea oil industry.

The 1980s brought further enhancements including a new clubhouse and the club's centenary celebrations. In 1990, renowned golf course architect Martin Hawtree added new holes, substantiating the layout of Aboyne golf course that has largely remained the same since 1913.

Green fees are structured by season. From 1st May to 30th September, the standard green fee is £90. After 4 PM, the rate is reduced to £65.

During April and October, the standard green fee is £65, reduced to £55 after 4 PM. Junior fees are £25.

5-day passes are also available for both UK residents and standard visitors.
