Alston Moor Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cumbria. The club was first formed in 1906.
The golf course at Black House Farm was established on Easter Monday, 1906, although the associated club's existence dates back earlier. The original course composition was 9 holes with a total length of 1670 yards, featuring 2 par 3s and 7 par 4s, and the first President was Mr R.H. Horrocks, who also played a significant role in Penrith GC.
In 1914, due to a rental disagreement, the course was relocated to Bayle Hill, and despite being inaugurated by Mr Fleming and Mr Lamonby of Penrith, the course's presence was short-lived because of the First World War. Post-war, the club returned to the former site and faced financial difficulties leading to its dissolution in 1923, although a course was reportedly opened at Randalholme in 1924 without corroborative records.
The golf course enjoyed its most prosperous period between 1924 and the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, during which it expanded to 12 holes and maintained a robust membership. However, World War II halted competitions and course maintenance, resulting in a decline in its operations.
A resurgence in 1946 led to the restoration of the course, which was officially reopened by 1948 under the presidency of Mr T.W. Maughan. While the course faced challenges reconciling golfing activities with farming, it remained operational with support from local industry and the cooperative efforts of successive landowners, particularly Mr H. Raine.
The need for a new location arose in the mid-1960s due to the incompatible demands of farming and golf, leading to the purchase of Hermitage Farm in 1969. The acquisition was made possible through a combination of grants, interest-free loans from local companies and members, and the subsequent establishment of the golf course on this new site.
Today, the golf course, now known as The Hermitage, is situated at Hermitage Farm on Middleton Road in Alston, Cumbria. Contact information and clubhouse hours are available for members and visitors interested in the competition days and other golf-related activities.
