About: Appleby Golf Club

Appleby Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cumbria. The club was first formed in 1894.

The golf course at Appleby was first established in 1894 on Minsceugh Moor; in 1903 the present course was laid out on Brackenber Moor by the former Open Champion Willie Fernie.

As Tom Mills remarked on the Cookie Jar Golf Podcast (Ep. 123, Apr 2022): "Not sure how many people listening will have known about Appleby or how many will have played it." The show went on to capture its character: "The whole course has got Cleeve vibes. It's got Kington vibes. There are sheep everywhere. There's horses on it. It's not common land, they own the freehold, but the farmers have right to pasture animals on it."

Heather and bracken define the moorland, and the 15th, the Bell Hole, presents a significant challenge with Hilton Beck, out-of-bounds and a concealed green. The sandstone bedrock allows year-round play. Appleby has hosted the County Championship since 1913 and remains well-regarded for its design and playability.
