Arcot Hall Golf Club

Arcot Hall Golf Club’s course was designed by the famed James Braid, who at 77, laid out the course which was completed in 1947. Braid, renowned for his dog-leg holes and pot bunkers, brought his expertise to bear on the course’s creation, costing £2450 at the time.

Originally Benton Park Golf Club, established in 1909, the club relocated to Arcot Hall due to a compulsory purchase order by Newcastle Corporation in 1939. The relocation was delayed by World War II, and the course at Arcot Hall did not begin construction until 1946.

The course was played on by members of Benton Park Golf Club, who became tenants of the land owned by British Coal. It wasn't until 1958 that the club was renamed to Arcot Hall Golf Club, aligning its identity with the historic land it occupied.

After several attempts to purchase the land throughout the late 20th century, the club finally acquired the hall and course land in 1996 for £385,000. This marked a new era of ownership and stewardship over the course's heritage and its future.

Throughout its history, the golf course has provided a challenging landscape for golfers, incorporating Braid's innovative design into the natural contours and features of the land. The course's journey from its origins at Benton Park to its current home at Arcot Hall reflects a storied past intertwined with the broader history of golf in the area.
