Athlone Golf Club

The Athlone Golf Course was first established in 1892 on a site known as the Batteries, initially catering to British army officers and R.I.C. personnel and consisted of nine holes. By 1904, the course underwent its first major change, adopting a new constitution and renaming itself Athlone Golf Club, with local businessmen and professionals joining the ranks of players.

In 1920, the Athlone Golf Course moved to Garnafailagh to avoid urban encroachment but relocated again in 1938 to Hodson Bay, with a design by Mr. J. McAllister and an opening date of June 19 that year. Significant developments include the 1972 clubhouse opening, subsequent course layout revisions by Hawtree & Co., and enhancements in the 80s advised by Mr. Eddie Hackett, leading to the lengthening of two holes.

The early 2000s saw further improvements with a three-year redevelopment program spearheaded by Mr. Eddie Connaughton and executed by S.O.L. Golf Construction Ltd., featuring USGA standard sand-based greens, water features, and a new par 3 sixth hole. Athlone Golf Course has a history of hosting significant tournaments, including the All-Ireland Cups and Shields Finals in 1998, and both the All Ireland Mixed and Ladies Championships in 2007.

Green fees vary depending on the season. Summer rates (April 1st - October 31st) are higher than winter rates (November - March).

Discounted rates are available for hotel guests, members' guests, students, and juniors. Society rates are also available for groups.
