Baberton Golf Club

Established in 1893, Baberton Golf Club was constituted at High Park, part of the historic Baberton Estate, with a 9-hole course designed by Willie Park Jr. By 1894, the course was expanded to 18 holes and also featured a ladies' short hole course.

The course underwent major reconstructions, including Ben Sayers's extension in 1911, James Braid's redesign in 1926, and the transformation into a sand-based course completed before 2001. These changes have allowed the course to accommodate a greater number of rounds and withstand the Scottish climate.

In wartime, Baberton Golf Club's relationship with the 3rd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry led to the establishment of the HLI Cup, a major trophy still contested today. The course itself was significantly affected during both World Wars, including the installment of anti-aircraft defenses and the allocation of parts of the course for food production during World War II.

Notably, Baberton Golf Club was the meeting place of renowned war poets Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves on October 13, 1917, commemorated by a plaque installed in 2017 at the old clubhouse. The course's significance extends beyond golf, serving as a historical landmark connected to literary history.
