About: Bath Golf Club

Bath Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Somerset. The club was first formed in 1880.

Bath Golf Club was established in February 1880, with the original course known as The Warren located on Bathampton Down, roughly a mile from the city center of Bath. Initially, the course comprised only 9 holes, and fencing was necessary to protect the greens from grazing animals.

In 1883, following advice from Tom Dunn, the course expanded to 18 holes, and that same year, the club's name changed to Bath and Kingsdown Golf Club, later becoming Bath Golf Club in 1890 as Kingsdown formed its own separate entity. The ladies of Bath had their own course on the same down, with top players allowed on the men's course if they had a handicap of 6 or fewer.

Notable events include an exhibition match in 1902 between Harry Vardon and J. H. Taylor, and in 1906, Taylor was commissioned to suggest enhancements to the course. Subsequent improvements in 1913 were guided by James Braid, with further modifications implemented through Harry Colt's design in 1937, particularly the construction of the current 10th and 11th holes.

The course's ownership was secured in 1921 when the club purchased the freehold for £4000, and the layout saw changes in 1928 to accommodate a new city reservoir. The present clubhouse was opened in 1971, and the golf course features historic landmarks such as the Sham Castle, dating back to 1762, and archaeological remains from various eras, including Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age enclosures, which serve as distance markers on the course.
