Billingham Golf Club

In 1964, a local building company named Moore and Cartwright planned to establish an eighteen-hole golf course on land known as Northfield Farm to the west of the then A19, with Henry Cotton as the architect. However, by March 1966, after their planning permission was initially approved, the company did not follow through and the project was halted when the planning permission was withdrawn.

Following the stalled project, Billingham Urban District Council took a significant step in the creation of the golf course by adopting a committee's minute to develop the land into a golf course and clubhouse. Negotiations led to the purchase of 136 acres plus farm buildings at a cost of £27,200, and golf course architects C.F. Cotton and Company, represented by J.J.F. Pennink, were contacted to submit a detailed course layout scheme.

Matters progressed when the Billingham Urban District Council formally agreed to purchase the land and develop the golf course, granting a lease to the to-be-formed golf club. Construction for the golf course began with the council resolving to accept a layout and development tender from contractors Verge and Embankment Beautification Limited.

The opening of the golf course was set for April 5th, 1969, following extensive fundraising, the settling of financial affairs, and ensuring adequate development standards. Despite facing several obstacles including loan denials, planning permission hitches, and infrastructure challenges, the committee persevered, and ultimately the golf course came into fruition.
