Blackburn Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1894.
Blackburn Golf Club's 18-hole parkland golf course was established in 1894 during Blackburn's industrial prominence, and modifications over the years have transformed it from a grazed land into a course with views of the Pennines Hills and Lancashire coast. The inaugural meeting for the golf club took place at The Old Bull Hotel on 16th February 1894, with the Blackburn Golf Club formally named on 6th June 1894, and initial membership fees set.
D. Herd was hired as the professional on 18th July 1894, and the first plans for an 18-hole course were presented in 1908, with the course completed by November 1910. During World War I, the club had members who earned Victoria Crosses for their bravery, indicating the club's involvement in historical events.
James Braid, a renowned golf course designer, visited the Blackburn Golf Club in February 1933, leading to the adoption of his improvement suggestions. Throughout World War II, the club supported service members by offering course access, and also made strategic decisions to protect the club's assets and contribute to wartime recreation.
The course has evolved considerably over time with major events impacting its development, such as the introduction of water points in 1972 and the planting of 8,700 trees by the Forestry Commission in 1979 which significantly changed the landscape and challenges of the golf course. An additional influx of 1,300 trees planted by members also marked the period leading up to the course's current state.
The Blackburn Golf Club participated in and won various golfing trophies and competitions throughout the years, reflecting its active competitive presence in the sport. In 1994, the club celebrated its centenary, with Ray Smith documenting the comprehensive history in "Blackburn Golf Club 100 years 1894 – 1994."
