Blackley Golf Club

Blackley Golf Club was established in November 1907 on 62 acres of land in the Charlestown road area of Manchester, transformed from a small farmhouse and boggy terrain into a nine-hole course. Its foundation was largely due to Mr. Fred Johnson, an architect who redrew plans in 1910 to improve the course, with the official new course opening in June 1923.

The course faced numerous challenges, including drainage issues that were addressed in 1924, and the threat of land development that resulted in a 1937 move to White Moss Farm, Victoria Avenue. This transition included transferring the turf from the old greens to the new course, reflecting dedication to maintaining the course's quality.

During World War II, parts of the course were repurposed for agricultural production to support the war effort, and the club's community remained active in charitable contributions. Post-war, in 1947, the course underwent reseeding of affected areas, symbolizing the club's resilience and ability to recover.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the club encountered continued threats of development, leading to significant rerouting and redesigning of the course, including during the construction of a nearby motorway. In 1999, after settling a dispute over land ownership, the club secured a 125-year lease and opened a new course layout.

Subsequent improvements were made to the course, with new greens meeting U.S. Golf Association standards, and the clubhouse was rebuilt and completed in June 2009. The club has faced various obstacles, including the recession in 2010, but has made efforts to adapt and attract new members, continuously trying to enhance facilities and the overall course.
