About: Bon Accord Golf Club

Bon Accord Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North East Scotland. The club was first formed in 1872.

With its origins in 1872, Kings Links golf course is a council run golf course close to Aberdeen Football Club. Three golf clubs, Bon Accord, Caledonian and Northern Golf Club have playing rights to the course and are aptly located on "Golf Road". It is a traditional layout, with arguanly enough dunes and gorse to be considered a raw links course, and it also offers sea views.

The history of golf in Aberdeen dates back to at least 1625, with references to golf holes, suggesting early forms of the game. By 1661, golf on the town links is documented, though informal play had occurred since at least 1575.

In August 1780, Aberdeen Golf Club established a formal course to avoid play disruptions, marking a significant early attempt at structured golfing. The original course layout, marked by stones, was located at the south end of Aberdeen Links.

By 1852, the course had expanded to seven holes across Queens Links and Broad Hill, with golfers playing two rounds of 14 holes in stroke competitions. This period marks a substantial phase of the course's evolution, despite none of this ground being in play today.

Significant developments occurred in the mid-19th century, including Willie Park's creation of new holes in 1852 and Willie Dunn's redesign in 1856. By 1865, adjustments to the course layout were made to accommodate a wood store, leading to a 14-hole course until 1873.

In 1872, the course was extended northward, forming the basis of the present-day Kings Links, with 14 holes initially laid out. By 1876, it became an 18-hole course, including the notable Valley Hole as the 11th.

The Bon Accord Golf Club, established in 1872, still plays on Kings Links, highlighting the site's long-standing golf heritage. The Aberdeen Golf Club, later Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, moved to Balgownie in 1888, indicating the evolving landscape of golf in Aberdeen.

Over time, the Queens Links and Broad Hill were abandoned for the current Kings Links location, with Broad Hill remaining largely unchanged and accessible for walks, marking the historical continuity of the site.
