Boyce Hill Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Essex.
The original eighteen-hole golf course was designed by "Joe" Steel, a professional from Rochford Hundred, who utilized the natural terrain to create the course layout. Features of the original design included holes that ran in opposite directions to the current layout and holes that are completely different, with part of the course land now occupied by a reservoir.
Notable characteristics of the course included the first hole crossing a ditch near the present-day pond, and the second hole playing uphill to an area that is currently a reservoir. Throughout the course, changes in elevation, strategic placement of tee boxes, and the presence of a variety of hazards provided a challenging setting for the game.
The layout of the Fifth Hole was described as a "par six" measuring 500 yards, requiring a shot over a hill with a semi-turn to the right. The original position of the Sixth Hole's tee made it a straighter shot than what is currently a dogleg.
In the later portions of the course, the Twelfth Hole was a 500-yard downhill stretch described as a "Bogey Five," while the Thirteenth played as a 140-yard short hole. Other holes, like the Fourteenth and Fifteenth, ran in the opposite direction of current play, highlighting how the layout has evolved over time.
Challenges on the course included a number of Elm trees that acted as the main hazards, particularly noted in the Seventeenth Hole called the "Six Tree Hole." However, changes in the landscape, such as the loss of many Elm trees due to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s, have altered these hazards.
The layout concluded with an Eighteenth Hole measuring around 465 yards, with the finishing green originally located where the present practice putting green is now. Over the years, the course has seen various transformations, but distinctive elements of the original design by Joe Steel are still recognized in the current configuration.
