About: Bromborough Golf Club

Bromborough Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cheshire. The club was first formed in 1903.

Bromborough Golf Course occupies land that has a rich history, being mentioned as part of the 'little hamlet of Hargreave' in the Domesday Book of 1086. The area, once known as Neston-cum-Hargreave, is now linked to the modern-day Hargrave Lane near the M53, which previously marked the western boundary of Bromborough Golf Course until 1969.

The land where the golf course is situated was part of the assets owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury as recorded on The Map of 1843, and the Hassall family were tenant farmers in the early 19th century. Joseph Hassall was a prominent figure who resided at Hargrave House Farm, strategically located adjacent to the future site of the Bromborough Golf Course.

In the early 1900s, the Hassall family established a rudimentary 9-hole golf course on the farmland, turning into a local attraction that eventually led to the formation of Bromborough Golf Club in 1903. While specific records of the establishment are lacking, listings in annual golf publications such as the Golfing Annual and Nisbet's Golf Yearbook confirm the formal recognition of the club's inauguration in 1903, with an original membership capped at 100 associates and an annual fee of 1 Guinea.

The course and club remained under the ownership of the Earl of Shrewsbury until 1911, when William Hesketh Lever, later Viscount Leverhulme, acquired the land. Leverhulme Estates' ownership of the Golf Course and Club House land was instrumental in the long-standing relationship between the Leverhulme family and the Club, but during World War I, golf activities were suspended, and the Club House was converted into a Red Cross hospital.

Post-World War I, Ernest Hassall, a renowned golfer from the Hassall family, played a key role in the development of an 18-hole course, which was inaugurated in 1923. The club gained prominence for creating exceptional golf talent on the national and international stages, and this status was reinforced when the golf course underwent alterations to accommodate the construction of the M53 motorway, leading to the design of challenging new holes by local golfer Gordon Edwards and the layout of a 6548 yard, par 72 championship course.

In subsequent years the club saw many developments, including an extensive tree planting program to separate fairways and the modernization of the course. The Club House underwent multiple renovations and expansions as well, with a new facility being constructed in 1973 to replace the original which was eventually demolished.

Bromborough Golf Course's challenges were recognized when it hosted prestigious championships like the English Mens’ Seniors’ Championship (2003), English Amateur Championship (2005), Cheshire Matchplay Championship (2010), and Cheshire Seniors' Strokeplay Championship (2018). The course is officially rated as particularly difficult with a Slope Rating of 142 for White Tees and continues to attract golfers looking to take on the Bromborough challenge.

Investment in course improvements has been continuous, with significant projects such as new green constructions and fairway drainage being completed in the early 2000s. The club has also introduced new events such as The Bromborough Bowl and The Bromborough Masters to its golfing calendar.

The course's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, maintaining a strong presence in the region and continuing to provide a challenging and enjoyable golfing experience. The land—once part of farmland and now part of the Leverhulme Estate—alongside the continuous enhancements, cements Bromborough Golf Course as an esteemed venue in the Wirral, appreciated by members and visitors alike.
