About: Burghley Park Golf Club

Burghley Park Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lincolnshire. The club was first formed in 1890.

The Burghley Park Golf Club course was established on the Burghley Estate on October 29, 1890, with the Marquis of Exeter as the founding president, a title held by his descendants for over a century. Initially situated on the ‘Waterloo Plain’, the course was moved to its current location, ‘High Park’, in 1901 to facilitate the production of hay by the Marquis on the original site.

Notable developments at the course include the introduction of a tractor in 1930 and the installation of bunkers in the 1950s, while the course also saw the continuous grazing of sheep, which indirectly contributed to the quality of the fairways. Despite challenges such as partial closure during the Second World War, the course remained playable, and sheep grazing continued on the course during this period with greens protected by fencing.

The course is known for its fast-draining limestone foundation and native grassland links-style featuring indigenous bents and fescue grasses. In the late 1950s, the layout of the course was solidified, with changes over the years generally involving the realignment of tees rather than modification to the greens.

In 1992, the course was updated with an irrigation system for the greens and tees. Tom McKenzie was brought in 2007 to consult on the course's development, while Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine later contributed to a significant investment in the golf course, including a machinery upgrade, staff retraining, and a five-year hole redevelopment program.

Visitors are welcome to play on weekdays and after 2pm on weekends/Bank Holidays. Tee-times are available to book up to 5 days in advance.

Twilight rates are available after 3pm. Visiting golfers must have a valid WHS handicap or be a member of another Golf Club.
