Cardiff Golf Club is a members' golf club, in South Wales. The club was first formed in 1921.
The establishment of Cardiff Golf Club's course began in 1921 when two men, Reuben Pugsley and Trevor Williams, envisioned creating a golf course in Cardiff to ease the difficulties of traveling to existing courses. Initially meeting with overwhelming support from prospective members, they faced the challenge of finding a suitable site within a reasonable distance from Cardiff for an 18-hole course.
After considering three potential sites, negotiations led to an agreement for the lease of farmland from Mr. Ewan G. Davies and the purchase of adjacent land from Mr. Wyndham Clarke to secure access from Cyncoed Road. Following this, in November 1921, it was resolved to form a golf club, and a committee proceeded with the practical side of designing the course.
The initial layout of the 9 holes was overseen by Robert Walker, the first professional, along with input from others including H. J. Marjoram and A. H. Symonds. The first tee was positioned near the current 17th green, with plans to later extend the course to a full 18 holes, which was achieved by March 1923.
In 1950, golf architect C. K. Cotton was consulted to suggest alterations, resulting in the construction of new holes and the rearrangement of others, including the current 4th, 11th, and adjustments to the 1st. Cardiff Golf Club purchased the course land from Mr. Davies in 1947, and minor transactions of course-related land occurred subsequently.
Significant developments in the facility occurred when a Development Committee was formed in 1995, leading to the construction of a new clubhouse, largely completed in 1998 at a cost of about £1.1 million, and officially opened in 1999. The course has maintained its structure with minor alterations over the years, continuing to serve as a venue for golfers throughout the region.
Visitor green fees are available and visitors must have an official handicap. From April 1st to October 30th, the weekday and Sunday (after 10 am) rate is £80.00. The county card rate is £60.00 and the member guest rate is £25.00. From November 1st to March 31st, the weekday and Sunday (after 10 am) rate is £30.00, the county card rate is £25.00 and the member guest rate (weekday only) is £20.00.
