Castletroy Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Limerick. The club was first formed in 1936.
Castletroy Golf Course was established in early 1936 when a group of men sought a new golfing outlet, initially struggling with capital and membership engagements until local businessmen provided financial support. Despite difficulties in securing land, a lease was eventually obtained from a local farmer for a nine-hole course near Castletroy, a growing residential area.
Designed by Willie Daly, the course's first layout was completed but never realized, instead the course found permanent ground when 53 acres were leased in Castletroy, with the first nine holes laid out and ready for play. By February 1938, the golf course had expanded, purchasing the leased land and an additional 38 acres for a total cost of £2,200, solidifying its establishment.
Further growth saw the golf course evolve into an 18-hole course by 1942, driven by a committed founding committee. The early infrastructure of the golf course included a modest clubhouse, powered by a dynamo attached to a concrete mixer, reflecting the humble beginnings of the course.
Castletroy Golf Course experienced growth during and after the Second World War, gaining recognition through National Media coverage of its Open Competitions. Notable tournaments such as the Tirconnell Cup, initiated in 1940, and the Scratch Cup, beginning in 1948, drew prestigious golfers from across Ireland to the course.
