About: Chester Le Street Golf Club

Chester Le Street Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Durham.

The golf course at Chester-le-Street offers a parkland layout with significant natural features, including its position along the banks of the River Wear and views of nearby Lumley Castle. It is also notable for its proximity to the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground and the mature woodland along most of the Eastern boundaries.

Designed jointly by Open Championship winners Sandy Herd and Ted Ray, the course has historical connections to royalty, with King George VI having played there prior to his ascension to the throne. The club maintains a sense of its heritage, highlighted by a photograph donated in 1928 by Prince Albert, Duke of York, who later became King George VI.

The course is characterized by its relatively flat terrain, punctuated by small inclines that influence fairway layouts. It incorporates a variety of tree hazards which play a strategic role in the game, especially on holes where accurate driving is essential to achieve direct shots to the greens.

All greens on the course are large, averaging 400/450 square yards, which provides a level of accessibility to golfers of varying handicaps. In 1997, a new clubhouse was introduced, enhancing the amenities and services available to members and visitors.
