About: Chesterfield Golf Club

Chesterfield Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Derbyshire. The club was first formed in 1897.

The Chesterfield Golf Club was founded in 1897 with its initial course located in Somersall Park, which was used until 1906 before moving to the current site after the area proved too small. Significant expansion and restructuring occurred in the late 1920s with the acquisition of Yew Tree Farm, setting the layout much as it exists today.

Destruction from World War II led to land reclamation by the club, along with compensation for damages, allowing for the post-war addition of the current seventh and eighth holes in 1952, while combining two previous holes into the ninth. In addition to course development, the clubhouse and facilities have undergone several renovations, including an updated professional shop and a refreshed bar and decor setup.

Notable features of the golf course are its challenging holes with distinctive names, such as the 'Murder Alley', and the incorporation of the region's notable landmarks like Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall into the course vision. The course's identity is further tied to the area through the Chesterfield Golf Club's badge which features the iconic Crooked Spire, a symbol prominent within Chesterfield Borough Council's coat of arms as well.

The design of the latter half of the course is attributed to the architect Harry Colt, known for his work on numerous prestigious courses. However, the thirteenth hole was mistakenly named 'Long Holt' due to a typographical error instead of named after Colt, a mistake that has since become part of the course's history.
