Cirencester Golf Club

Golf was first played in Cirencester in 1893 on an initial golf course located in Sapperton, which was laid out over old pastures. Due to the rising demand and associated challenges, including high maintenance costs and transport difficulties, a decision was made to establish a new course.

Designed by James Braid, the current course was established in 1910 and inaugurated with a match between the designer and Harry Vardon. The course has preserved its layout with minor modifications, including the addition of 3 new holes in 1996 due to land lost to a bypass construction.

Alongside the course, recent investments have been made to enhance practice facilities, including refurbishing a 6-bay driving range and introducing a new short game practice area by the Club House. Furthermore, the clubhouse itself is significant, with parts of it dating back to the opening of the course.

The golf course is a member of the 1893 Club, allowing for reciprocal playing rights amongst member clubs worldwide. This club celebrates the shared foundation year and encourages members to experience golf courses of their fellow clubs from the UK and internationally.

The course's notable features include shared valleys between the 4th & 18th holes, leading to high ground that offers compelling views and strategic challenges, particularly on holes 12, 13, and 14. A well-draining landscape ensures that the course can also be enjoyed during the winter season.
