About: City Of Newcastle Golf Club

City Of Newcastle Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Northumberland. The club was first formed in 1891.

The City of Newcastle Golf Course was founded in 1891 on land leased from the Freeman of the City and the Corporation of Newcastle upon Tyne. It initially served as a golf course on the Town Moor with the old mill on Claremont Road as its clubhouse.

Due to issues of public access and animal damage on the Town Moor, it was decided to relocate, and in 1907 a new site was leased from Mrs. Bainbridge of Grange Farm, with the Town Moor Course handed over to the Newcastle United Workmen's Club.

Harry Vardon, a renowned golfer and course designer, was appointed to conceptualize the new course in 1908, which measured 6068 yards with an initial par score of 82. James Braid played alongside Vardon in a challenge match to inaugurate the course.

In 1913, Alistair MacKenzie, celebrated for designing several high-profile courses, was contracted to redesign 12 holes of the Newcastle course. The refurbishment by MacKenzie entailed restructuring bunkers, cutting down bushes, and reducing rough patches which previously slowed play.

One of the distinctive incidents on the course was during the inaugural match, when the club's then Secretary, Mr. James Potts, struck and killed a crow with his first shot; the bird was later preserved and is on display in the clubhouse. The course's 14th hole, notably revamped by MacKenzie, is featured in his book "Golf Architecture."

By 1962, parts of the golf course land were repurposed for local community use, necessitating the creation of nine new holes and adjustments to the land lease with new landlords, Gosforth Urban District Council. Changes in local government in 1974 resulted in Newcastle City Council becoming the new landlords of the golf course.

Standard green fees during April-September are £40 per person. Golf members' guest rate is £20 per person. England County Card holders can play for £30 per person. Junior standard green fee (under 17) is £20. Members' guest under 17 rate is £10.
