About: Clones Golf Club

Clones Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cavan. The club was first formed in 1913.

Founded in 1913, Clones Golf Club in Ireland offers a picturesque 18-hole layout designed by Dr. Arthur Spring. Spanning 155 acres of rolling parklands near Clones, the course began as a nine-hole design before expanding in 2005 with two additional holes.

Clones Golf Club began its life with players enjoying the sport in a field on the Cavan road, and M.E. Knight subsequently set up a six-hole course in the nearby lands of Corcimmons. The official foundation of Clones Golf Club took place during a meeting on May 28, 1913, and the club quickly established a nine-hole course on grounds leased from Mr. Bamford at Lisnaroe for an annual rent of £35. By September 1913, the course opened, with affiliation to the Golfing Union of Ireland following in September 1916.

In its formative years the club navigated various challenges including Sunday golfing bans and the impact of Fermanagh members leaving in 1925. An unsuccessful attempt to purchase Ferguson's farm for a new 18-hole course occurred in 1926. Ultimately, Clones Golf Club established its current location at Hilton Park in 1928, with the original course design done by Mr. Combe, completed in 1933.

The current 18 hole course designed by Arthur Spring and was opened for play by ex-boxer Barry McGuigan on 1st August 2001.
