Congleton Golf Club

Congleton Golf Course was established following a meeting on October 22, 1898, at the 'Lion and Swan' where it was decided the course should be located near the railway station. The first competition on the course was held on May 13th, 1899, with Mr. Phillip Berisford winning by completing the course in 92 shots.

In 1904, after some dissatisfaction with the original location, it was decided that the course would be moved to its current location, which was finalized around 1907. Major changes to the course layout were made in May 1931 to eliminate crossover issues, resulting in the layout that is mostly recognized today.

The original clubhouse of the course was located behind the first tee until 1967, after which a new clubhouse was opened on December 2nd of that year. Notable golfers that have played at Congleton include Henry Cotton, who scored a 65 in May 1951, and Peter Alliss, who scored a 68 in October 1964.

Other acclaimed players such as Max Faulkner, the 1950 Open Champion, and Neil Coles, who holds the professional course record with a score of 59, have also played on the course. John Barnett, a PGA professional who passed through the club's junior section, served as captain in 1997/98.
