Connemara Golf Club

The Connemara Championship Golf Links was established in the late 1960s when Peter Waldron, a local priest, envisioned creating a golf course as a form of community development in the Clifden area. This remote seaside region in Connemara, situated in County Galway, Ireland, was chosen for its expansive and rocky terrain deemed suitable for the sport.

Respected local figures and landowners contributed to the realization of the golf course, with negotiations and land acquisition spearheaded by Father Waldron. The course design was entrusted to Eddie Hackett, known for his minimalist approach that emphasizes natural landscape features, and it opened for play on June 7, 1973.

Connemara Championship Golf Links presents a challenging layout with a blend of shoreline holes and rugged rocky terrain, shaped with an intent to disturb as little ground as possible. Hackett's design philosophy was to work with the land provided by nature, a principle reflected in the course layout.

Despite initial financial and ownership challenges, the course was completed with a strong community backing, including a significant contribution from Mickey McDonagh who owned a vital portion of the land. This undertaking was characterized by widespread local involvement and shares offered to support the project's funding.

Green fees for the 18-hole Championship Course are €145 from November to March and €200 from April to October.
