Coombe Hill Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Greater London. The club was first formed in 1911.
Coombes Hill Golf Course was established on May 30th, 1911 after John Frederick Abercromby, who previously worked on Worplesdon Golf Club in Surrey, was appointed as the architect. The course was shaped by Abercromby's expertise and intuition, with an anecdote suggesting he surveyed the landscape from a hot air balloon to visualize the layout.
The initial opening game was played between Sir Arthur H. Paget K.C.B. and the Right Hon. A. J. Balfour MP, with the course already being noted for its challenging play as reported by the Surrey Comet. Notable members such as Winston Churchill and Prime Ministers Herbert Henry Asquith and David Lloyd George graced the course, and royals like Edward VIII and George VI played at Coombe Hill as ordinary members.
During the Second World War, Coombe Hill Golf Course endured damage from air raids, including a significant number of high explosive shells landing near or on the course, particularly affecting holes five, six, seven, and thirteen. Post-war, the course faced decline with only 60 members and was in a dilapidated state before it was acquired by Lou Freedman who established the inclusive ethos that the club was open to "anyone, of any color or creed".
Following the 1950s, the Coombe Hill Golf Course attracted celebrities such as Jimmy Tarbuck, Sean Connery and other luminaries from show business, while also boasting a heritage of having four professionals who were Open Champions: Arthur Havers, Alexander (Sandy) Herd, Henry Cotton, and Dick Burton. These professionals contributed to the course's reputation, with Burton influencing a generation of golfers through his tutelage at Coombe Hill.
