Coombe Wood Golf Club

The Coombe Wood Golf Course was established as a nine-hole layout in 1904 on part of the 1,300-acre Coombe Estate, which had been linked to Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. The course was expanded to an 18-hole layout post World War I, officially opening in its new form in 1922 by Field Marshall Earl Haig.

Designed to replace an unsightly gravel pit, the course's creation was spearheaded by Prince George, Duke of Cambridge and his sons; however, Prince George did not witness its opening, as he passed away in the year it opened. The inaugural captain of the club was The Hon Arthur Balfour, who was the Prime Minister at the time.

Financial and physical investments by club members were crucial for the golf course's survival post World War II, as it faced periods of disrepair and uncertainty due to short-term leases. The club's stability was finally assured in 1994 with the purchase of a new 125-year lease.

Notable golfers associated with Coombe Wood Golf Course include John de Forest, the English Amateur champion in 1932, P W L Risdon, an English international during the 1930s, and Pam Barton, the British Ladies Champion in 1936. James Heath marked the course's history by winning the Lytham Trophy by a record 10 shots and the English Amateur Championship in 2004.
