Craigmillar Park Golf Club

Craigmillar Park Golf Club was established in 1895, with the original course coming into existence upon securing a lease of land from Captain Gordon Gilmour. The golf course initially featured nine holes and was designed by Mr. Day of Musselburgh, as reported by the Scotsman newspaper on January 12, 1895.

In 1907, the golf course relocated to the eastern slopes of Blackford Hill due to the original land at Newington being repurposed for housing development. This move enabled the potential expansion of the course which transpired in 1927 when James Braid designed the 18-hole course known for its variety and challenges.

The location of the golf course offers views over Edinburgh, Fife, and down the coast to landmarks such as Berwick Law, Bass Rock, and the Isle Of May. Wildlife such as deer can frequently be observed on the course grounds.

Despite challenges with land ownership and leases, in 2003, Craigmillar Park Golf Club achieved security of tenure by purchasing the part of the course they did not previously own. The club had the foresight to advocate for gender equality in membership and club offices from its early days.

The golf course has hosted the Craigmillar Park Open since 1961, an event that attracts notable players and is part of the World Amateur Golf rankings. Among its distinguished winners is Sir Nick Faldo, who won the tournament in 1976 before turning professional.
