Crowborough Beacon Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Sussex. The club was first formed in 1895.
The Crowborough Beacon Golf Course was established on a day in October 1895 when Lady Cantelupe inaugurated the original nine-hole course which was later expanded. The first 18-hole exhibition match featured notable players J H Taylor and J Rowe, which marked the beginning of the course's evolution.
Lease arrangements for the course land were secured from the Earl De La Warr, and the 'Chiflik' property near the 1st tee and 18th green became the clubhouse. GT Langridge played a significant financial and administrative role in the early development of the course, contributing to its original design and framework.
In 1902, the Crowborough Beacon Golf Course secured the freehold for the clubhouse at the price of £2,100 and by 1905, the club acquired the Manorial Rights of the Alchornes Manor, becoming its own landlord. A new clubhouse opened in 1907 and was built using local materials, reflecting the success and support of the club's members.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a club committee member and appointed Captain for 1910, had close ties with the Crowborough Beacon Golf Course as it was the nearest to his home. His contribution to the club is commemorated through legends that connect him and the course beyond his lifespan.
The golf course saw significant upgrades in 1925 to align it with the standards of modern courses of the time, including the hiring of an experienced greenkeeper. The involvement of Dr Alister MacKenzie in the redesign of eight holes in the 1920s has been documented, adding Crowborough Beacon to the list of esteemed layouts associated with his design work.
Archival discoveries include a rare book by golf writer Bernard Darwin from 1926, describing a hole-by-hole guide of the course, which now belongs to the club. These acknowledgments and findings have solidified Crowborough Beacon's historical significance in the realm of golf architecture.
