Derby Golf Club

The Derby Golf Course was established on April 27th, 1923, with construction beginning at a cost of £500, initiated as a municipal project for the city of Derby. It was officially opened by Councillor W. H. M. Marsdon, with notable figures such as the Mayor, Alderman Ling, blessing the project and Alderman Hart driving the first ball.

The course, intricately designed by Mr T. B. Farrington, a well-known County and Midlands golfer, presented a challenging match for its players, including the inaugural match where Alderman Hart was given twelve strokes by Farrington leading to a halved outcome. There was a historical aspect to the location as it had been the site of Derby Races approximately a century earlier before it was repurposed into a golf course.

The land on which the golf course was built, known as Cotton’s Farm, was initially set aside for smallholdings before the low demand led to its transformation into golf links. A commemorative match between the members of the Corporation and officials resulted in a score with the Officials winning 5 1/2 to the Corporation's 3 1/2.
