About: Dunmurry Golf Club

Dunmurry Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Antrim. The club was first formed in 1905.

The establishment of the golf course at Dunmurry came after a meeting of local industrialists and businessmen in the Courthouse in early 1905, where the idea garnered significant support and led to action to identify suitable land for a 9-hole course. A lease agreement was signed with Sir Robert Anderson for a 38-acre site near Dunmurry Lane and the Glen River, and the course, with a total yardage of 2,800 and the longest hole at 480 yards, was designed and constructed for £54, opening on May 15, 1905.

As demand grew, the course expanded beyond the initial 9 holes with additional property acquisition in 1906, replacing parts of the course lost to housing development, and a new clubhouse was commissioned. By 1927, further expansion had transformed the course into an 18-hole layout over 6,000 yards. Significant changes and improvements continued over the years, including a unique 14-hole reconfiguration during the late 1960s and eventually a full 18-hole course by 1977.

Adversity struck in 1972 and 1977 when the clubhouse was bombed, requiring extensive repairs and security measures, which eventually led to the necessity for relocation. By 1983, the course had moved to a new site on Dunmurry Lane, officially opened by Peter Alliss, although early challenges with the course conditions would demand substantial works on greens and drainage. The course has since been recognized for its quality, winning awards for Clubhouse and Course Presentation in 2002 and Club of the Year in 2003.

Competitively, the golf course has witnessed the triumphs of its associated teams and individual players, most notably capturing the All Ireland Title in the Barton Shield Foursomes after an 89-year pursuit. These successes underline the course's standing in the region's golfing community. Dunmurry's course, with its history of development, resilience, and achievements, has established a notable presence in the arena of Irish golf.
