About: Durham City Golf Club

Durham City Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Durham. The club was first formed in 1887.

The Durham City Golf Course was established in 1888 at Pinkerknowle on university land, following its inauguration in December 1887. Initially a 6-hole course, it expanded to a 9-hole layout by May 1893, with membership and facilities growing over the subsequent years.

In 1927, plans were announced to relocate the course to its second home at Mount Oswald, just 200 yards from the original site. The course at Mount Oswald gained recognition when Sir Henry Cotton and Alf Padgham played an exhibition match there in 1937.

The course was requisitioned by the military during World War II, with the East Sussex Regiment occupying the Clubhouse and using the grounds to hold prisoners of war. Post-war, in 1966, the course hosted an exhibition match with Ryder Cup stars including Dai Rees, Dave Thomas, and Peter Alliss.

After years of uncertain tenancy, the course found a permanent home in November 1974 when it moved to the Littleburn location. This parkland course, laid out on the banks of the River Browney, incorporates mature trees lining each hole, offering unique challenges and has hosted the English Girls Championship in 2008.
