Eastbourne Downs Golf Club

Established in 1908, the Eastbourne Downs Golf Course was designed by J.H. Taylor and is located on top of the South Downs behind Beachy Head with a view over Eastbourne. The landowner, Mr. Carew Davies-Gilbert, leased the land to a newly formed company for the development of the course and clubhouse.

The original clubhouse was opened in 1909, with the course featuring 18 holes and presenting natural hazards including pits, ponds, and gorse, with a total length of around 5,500 yards. Notable course alterations and a move of the clubhouse to a higher location occurred in 1974, where it remains to the present day.

The golf course has historical significance as the home of Major Cyril Tolley, a renowned Amateur Champion and one of Great Britain's most powerful hitters, who joined as a junior member in 1909. Tolley had a distinguished career and served as the club president from 1954 until 1979.

In 1929, the Eastbourne Corporation purchased the land encompassing the golf course, leading to new lease arrangements and later, significant moves to relocate the clubhouse due to membership growth and infrastructure requirements. This culminated in the opening of the current clubhouse in 1974, with enhancements continuing over the years, such as the addition of a conservatory in 1995 affording expansive views.
