Ellesmere Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1913.
Originall referred to as Worsley and Walkden Golf Club in the Farnworth Chronicle on February 22nd 1913, Ellesmere Golf Club, established in 1913, is located near Manchester City Centre and features a parkland-style golf course. The course spans 6287 yards, offering a par 70 challenge, characterized by its mature trees and meticulously maintained grounds.
The generous action of the Duke of Northumberland, Lord Hastings, Lord Ridley, and Lord Armstrong in granting the lease of land on nominal terms for ‘playing the game of golf’, is being followed by other noble landowners in various parts of the country. Lord Ellesmere, one of the most popular patrons of the turf, has shown an exceptionally strong interest in cultivating the health-giving and manly sport amongst his employees. At his own expense, a nine-holes course over 35 acres of grassland, with plenty of good sporting hazards, has been opened between Worsley and Walkden for the benefit of the employees on his lordship’s estate. In addition to the excellent course, Lord Ellesmere has provided a workshop and a cottage for the professional. The rapid development of golf in England has been largely due to the princely liberality of the big landowners of the country, and our nobility have always been in the forefront in making large concessions either in land or money for assisting the industrial classes to pursue healthy, clean sport. The course is renowned for its interesting holes and is well-presented throughout the year, making it a notable golfing destination in the Manchester area. Additionally, Ellesmere Golf Club boasts extensive practice facilities, including a 330-yard practice ground and areas for pitching, chipping, and putting.
