About: Enniscorthy Golf Club

Enniscorthy Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Wexford. The club was first formed in 1908.

Established references to Enniscorthy Golf Course date back to entries in the Golfing Annual of 1887, which noted its presence in the 1906/1907 edition with further documentation in the 1908/1909 edition identifying it as having 50 members and an Honorary Secretary named Mr. P.F. Roche. The golf course was affiliated with the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1908 and with the Irish Ladies' Golf Union in 1925.

Initially, the course consisted of nine holes and was situated approximately three quarters of a mile from the Enniscorthy Railway Station, believed to be near the grounds of Saint John's Manor. However, the land was considered unsuitable for an extended golfing season and only allowed play from December to April due to agricultural use.

In 1913, reports indicated a move to secure new grounds closer to the town and Mr. W. C. Pickman, who previously laid out the original nine-hole course at Portmarnock, was commissioned for the design. The golf course land was leased with the purchase only being finalized in 1970, which subsequently led to improvements and the thriving of the club culminating in a two-storey clubhouse that opened in 1977.

The extension of the course to 18 holes was first recorded in 1982 and confirmed by Golf Course Architect Eddie Hackett, who deemed the land suitable for golf; construction for the new holes began in 1987 under the supervision of Jim Whitney. Despite his untimely passing in 1988, the 18-hole course was completed and played on for the first time on May 28th, 1989, with subsequent improvements and changes in the 1990s overseen by both Hackett and Pat Ruddy.

In 2005, additional land was acquired to enhance the course and address safety concerns, leading to the creation of two new holes designed by Golf Course Architect Jeff Howes and incorporated into play in 2007. These additions are considered a significant enhancement to the facility, reflecting the efforts and dedication of the golfing community associated with Enniscorthy Golf Course.
