Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North Scotland. The club was first formed in 1888.
Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Links was first documented in 1702, but it wasn't until 1793, as noted in the Statistical Account of Rosemarkie, that golf became an established sport in the area. Becoming the 15th Oldest Recorded Club in the world, it is confirmed that golf was being played alongside the present-day 6th, 7th, and 8th holes.
A significant development in the course's history occurred around 1876 when Mr. Kennedy, an avid golfer and member of 5 clubs, formed two holes on the links, one of which is near the current clubhouse. These early holes marked the transition from haphazard play to a more structured game that would lead to the official formation of a golf club on September 9, 1888.
The first clubhouse opened in 1895 and included provisions for members to store their equipment safely. The course had to overcome challenges such as carts damaging the fairways, which were resolved by the town council laying out designated routes for the carts.
The outbreak of the First World War affected the club, with a decline in members and activities, and damage to the clubhouse by the Highland Cyclist Battalion. Post-war, the course saw a revival, but it wasn't until 1922 that it was restored sufficiently to resume competitions, extending to 18 holes by 1924 and earning a new clubhouse a decade later.
In 1932, renowned golfer James Braid was invited to redesign the course, which led to the layout known today, with additional modifications made by Braid in the subsequent years. However, during the Second World War, the course and clubhouse were requisitioned for military use, resulting in considerable damage but were restored and improved post-war with 18 holes operational by 1947.
With growing membership in the 1950s, a new clubhouse was financed and gifted by Miss Isa Ross, opening in 1959, only to be expanded in 1977 due to increased demand. The club saw its membership cap adjusted over the years, and by the late 20th century, Sunday golf became permitted, reflecting the evolving culture and popularity of the sport in the area.
