Fortwilliam Golf Club

The Fortwilliam Golf Course was established in 1891 on land between Fortwilliam Park and Parkmount in Belfast when a group of eleven gentlemen formed the Fortwilliam Golf Club. Initially, the course was a nine-hole course used only from November to March because of the landowner's agricultural needs.

In 1903, the club moved to a well-established location, with a new nine-hole course designed by Mr Cuthbert Butchart, who also reconstructed parts of the course later that year to accommodate additional land. The course was expanded to 58 acres south of Gray's Lane and included a clubhouse costing £378.

The golf course underwent a significant expansion in 1923, resulting in its first eighteen-hole configuration, with eleven holes south and seven holes north of Gray's Lane. Charlie Pope, the Club's Pro since 1904, designed this layout which closely resembles the course played today.

By 1972, the golf course had a new clubhouse, opened in August by various dignitaries including Mr Tom Montgomery, President of the GUI, and costing approximately £80,000. An extension to the clubhouse and demolition of the old structure occurred in 1982, with renovations of £230,000.

In 1990, a new professional's shop was constructed to meet the growing needs of the Fortwilliam Golf Course. The course, renowned for challenging play and its historical backdrop, also launched a new website in 2012 to better serve its members and guests.
