Gosforth Golf Club

Established in 1906, Gosforth Golf Club began as a 9-hole course on land leased from Laycock Estates and expanded to 18 holes within two years. The course was extended and remodeled in 1924 and since then, the layout has seen minimal changes, but significant improvements have been made through tree planting and various course enhancements.

Sheep grazing was employed as the primary means of keeping the course grass in check for its first 40 to 50 years; this, along with hand-pushed mowers for the greens, continued until after the Second World War. The club now utilizes a modern fleet of equipment to maintain the course, indicating continued investment in its standard of upkeep.

During both World War 1 and World War II, parts of the golf course were utilized for military and agricultural purposes, impacting the club's activities and finances. In World War II, for example, an anti-aircraft gun emplacement was situated on the course, and occasionally the course suffered aerial bombings from German aircraft targeting the region.

In 1994, a significant development occurred when Laycock Estates offered the club a 999-year lease, ensuring long-term stability for the course. Funds were raised, and the lease was officially signed on 21st July 1994, marking an important milestone in the club's history.
