Great Harwood Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1896.
Great Harwood Golf Course was established in January 1896, originally located on land at Belmount where thirteen holes were constructed. The course moved to its current location at Harwood Bar in October 1927 when the lease for the Belmount location ended and a Limited Company was formed to finance the construction of a new nine-hole course.
Designed by Mr. F. Palmer of Entwistle, the new course at Harwood Bar was ready for play by July 1928 and officially opened later that month. The layout presents challenges which have been exhibited in professional matches, such as when Open Championship winner Alf Padgham scored a 64 during an exhibition match at the course in 1936.
The golf course experienced substantial interruptions due to the Ullswater/Manchester water pipeline construction in 1954, with additional disruptions in 1956 and 1971. These interventions affected the course's layout and fairways, with the pipelines underneath carrying significant volumes of water for the North West region.
Notable golfers who have played at Great Harwood include Gary Hindle, who played for the England Boys Team, and John Aspinall, an elite amateur with a course record and a putting prowess that left a marked impression. Their performances, along with others, contributed to the club's competitive success, such as winning the ELGA gross prize multiple times.
Throughout its history, the club has produced skilled golfers and teams that have excelled in regional competitions, and the course itself has been the venue for various golfers to achieve individual success. The juniors at the club have also gained recognition, with some entering the professional golf ranks and succeeding in national tours.
The centenary of the golf course was celebrated in 1996, marked by a "Flag Raising" ceremony and recognition from both local and golfing authorities. Throughout its history, the golf course and club have hosted various celebrities from the entertainment and sports industries.
Visitor green fees are £28 on weekdays and £30 on weekends. To book a tee time, contact the club directly or visit their website.
