About: Hampstead Golf Club

Hampstead Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Greater London. The club was first formed in 1893.

The Hampstead Golf Club course was established in 1893 when Tom Dunn designed the original nine holes on land leased from the church commission. This land, known as Spaniards Farm, was situated between Turner's Wood and Bishop's Wood and became the nearest golf course to the center of London.

Over time, the course experienced several alterations including changes to its length and hole configurations due to land acquisitions and other developments. Notable features include Tom Dunn's signature design elements such as fairway cross hazards and wing bunkers at the entry point of greens, with the second-oldest hole reportedly parallel to the modern first hole.

In the early 20th century, the course's layout continued to evolve with additional land purchases leading to an increase in yardage and the reconfiguration of several holes. In 1927, the course length reached 2,863 yards, and by 1956, after post-war renovations, the course measured 2,906 yards with standard scratch of 68.

Significant course improvements have taken place over the years, including the implementation of new fairway drainage, reconfiguration of holes, and various clubhouse expansions and renovations. Notably, the course weathered the challenges of World War II, with the land being utilized for military training exercises along with maintaining golf play.

In recent years, the course has seen more modern updates, including a comprehensive tree-planting program, and greens renovations on the 2nd and 3rd holes. As of 2020, modifications such as the redesign of the 3rd green and the removal of certain bunkers on the 6th hole reflect ongoing efforts to maintain the course's playability and challenge.

Hampstead Golf Club celebrates a history of over 125 years, with a course that has maintained its relevance through continuous adaptation and improvement. Its location and the contribution of its members and professionals have shaped its legacy as a prominent feature in London's golfing landscape.

The club is currently closed to visitor green fees, but member guests are permitted as well as Middlesex County card holders. A member guest round costs £35.00.
