Hankley Common Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Surrey. The club was first formed in 1896.
Hankley Common Golf Course was officially opened on 1st May 1897, with its origins tracing back to a foundation meeting on 7th December 1896. Originally starting as a nine-hole course, it has evolved considerably over time.
The course design was influenced by the legendary golfer and designer James Braid in 1921, who submitted plans to extend the course to 18 holes, and later by the course architect Harry Colt in March 1933, who further developed the course layout.
Notable developments include the opening of five new holes (2, 6, 7, 8, 10) in October 1923 and the addition of holes 11, 12, 13, and 14 on 7th June 1924. Subsequent modifications included the creation of three new holes as recommended by Harry Colt, which opened on 1st November 1935.
The ownership of the golf course land became a critical issue with several negotiations, leading to the club's decision to purchase Hankley Common in March 1942, solidifying the club's future on the site.
Upgrades to the course facilities included the installation of a cedar wood building in 1960, donated by J P Billmeir, to replace parts of the clubhouse. An investment in an automatic watering system for the greens was made in 1972 funded by loans from club members.
The course has also been the host for notable golfing events such as the 2009 Boys Home Internationals and the 2021 Men’s Home Internationals, reflecting its recognition as a challenging and reputable golfing venue.
In 1983, a new clubhouse designed by a member and architect Newman Turner was opened, which now serves as the hub for players and events. The club further engaged its members in 1997 and 1998 with proposals to extend and refurbish the clubhouse, culminating in a member vote to determine the preferred option.
