Hayling Golf Club

The Hayling Island Golfing Club was inaugurated on August 3rd, 1883 after Fleetwood Sandeman, who had a connection to the Sandeman port and sherry business, was inspired to form a golf course on Hayling Island. Initially, a 9-hole course was laid out by professional Joe Lloyd, with an extension to 18 holes following the acquisition of leases on Sinah Common.

The original 18-hole course design is attributed to Tom Dunn, a reputable course designer, while subsequent modifications were made by several notable golf architects including Tom Simpson, Harry Colt, and J.H. Taylor. The historical development of the course reflects changes in architectural styles from straightforward cross hazards to more strategic hazard placements.

Significant shifts in the course's layout occurred during the 1920s and '30s under Tom Simpson's guidance and again post-World War II when Simpson was reappointed to restore the course after it suffered war damage. The golf course features Simpson's handiwork on multiple holes, marking his last design project in the UK.

During World War II, the RAF occupied parts of the course for air defenses, leading to significant alterations and damage. Following the war, in 1947, Tom Simpson was tasked with restoring the course, which left a lasting influence on its design and shaping it into what it is today.

Hayling Golf Club operates a tee booking system for visitors. Winter rates (November - February) are £95. Summer rates (March - October) are £130 Monday-Thursday and £150 Friday-Sunday.

Twilight rates are available Mon-Thurs for £70 and Fri-Sun for £85. County card rates are £110 during summer months, Mon-Thu. Junior rates are available for £50 and Student rates are available for £65. Contact the Pro Shop to book a tee time.
