Heath Golf Club

The Heath Golf Club, located on a site called the Greatheath, was established in 1930, following the earlier Queen’s County Heath Golf Club from 1889 and the Maryboro Golf Club from 1903. The course began as a 9-hole course and was expanded to 18 holes in 1971.

Known for its heathland terrain similar to an inland links course, the course features remnants of historical activity including a race track alongside the first fairway and a stone viewing stand ruin near the 18th fairway. Bronze age archaeological elements are present, such as a ring barrow between tee boxes on the 6th fairway and a medieval circular enclosure known as a Rath at the 13th green.

The clubhouse stands in the place of the original Grandstand from 1889, having been rebuilt in 1991 and opened in August 1992. Additionally, a driving range was constructed at the club in 1987.

The government of Ireland owns the land on which the course is situated, and its operation is subject to a license from the Office of Public Works. The course is maintained under specific environmental guidelines, including the prohibition of non-native tree species and the use of fertilizers, to accommodate sharing the space with grazing sheep.
