Hendon Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Greater London. The club was first formed in 1903.
The golf course now known as Hendon Golf Club was established in 1900 when Walter Mull and Tommy Cutting rented 38 acres of grassland from Mr. Slade on Holders Hill Road for £10 per year, including a dressing room. Initially, the course featured 9 small greens with oversized holes, maintained by the founders and Mr. Slade's livestock, and was later expanded to a full-sized course by leasing additional land and forming Hendon Golf Club in 1903.
In 1903/04, J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon designed the course, and by 1905/06, a clubhouse was built on the west side of Holders Hill Road. Following a compulsory land purchase for a new trunk road in 1923, members bought additional land and sold the remaining area after development, securing a profit that assisted in purchasing the course's current location.
Harry Shapland Colt and J.F.S. Morrison were commissioned in 1925 to design the new layout, and contractors Franks & Harris alongside William Press for the irrigation system began construction. The revamped course featuring thirteen new holes, numerous bunkers, and an updated clubhouse was opened on April 10th, 1927, solidifying its status and attracting more members and visitors.
In the years that followed, the course served various roles, including supporting the war effort during WW2. The club faced a property ownership challenge by 1951, which was successfully navigated by newly elected Captain, Torquil Macleod, leading to the unencumbered freehold ownership of the land by the members.
Hendon Golf Club underwent another significant change when the old clubhouse was demolished in 1964, resulting in a new course layout where the front nine holes run anti-clockwise inside the back nine, which run clockwise, both starting and ending near the clubhouse. The club and course are owned by the members and continuously improved for the benefit of its members and guests.
