Hillside Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1923.
The golf course at Hillside Golf Club originated from a farm on Hill Side land, with an initial 9-hole layout established between 1911 and 1913. This course, measuring 2,850 yards, was set inland of the dunes on farmland, incorporating existing 'cops' of earth into its design.
In 1923, Hillside Golf Club Limited was formed to fund an 18-hole course, designed by Conway of Halifax, with work beginning in January of that year. By August, a combination of 10 new holes and 8 original ones formed an 18-hole course, which was fully completed in 1924, although some tees and greens required early renovation.
Substantial alterations to the course began in April 1957 with the reconfiguration of the 15th hole (current 8th) to achieve a left to right dogleg, involving considerable excavation of sandhills. The 18th hole was expanded by 68 yards and relocated to the seaward side in December 1959, utilizing additional land acquired from the Corporation.
In the 1960s, Hawtree set out the plan that would see the 16th and 17th holes undergo significant renovations involving extensive sand removal, creating 'monumental' valleys for these holes. Professional John Burton redesigned and supervised the construction of the 7th green, famously scoring a hole in one on its inaugural play.
Noteworthy events at Hillside include Jack Nicklaus' first British professional tournament at the Piccadilly Tournament in 1962. In 1982, Tony Jacklin won the Sun Alliance PGA Championship, and in 2019, local hero Tommy Fleetwood hosted the British Masters.
The course was also the stage for the DP World Tour – Cazoo Classic in 2022, where Richie Ramsay emerged victorious, and the 128th Amateur Championship in 2023, won by South African Christo Lamprecht.
